SEND - Special Educational Needs

Please Click to see our Inclusion Policy:

At John Rankin Junior School we are committed to meeting the Special Educational Needs of pupils and ensuring that they are encouraged and supported to achieve their full potential in every aspect of school life.

We endeavour to identify and provide support across the wide range of needs a child may have; communication and interaction, cognition and learning, emotional and mental health difficulties and Sensory/Physical needs.

We are an inclusive school where Pupils with SEN are taught alongside their peers through Quality First Teaching, targeted differentiation, 1:1 and small group work. Individual intervention can be offered by the SEN team when and where appropriate; tailored to an individual child’s need.

All support is made in discussion and agreement with parents and pupils.

Currently we are able to offer the following interventions to pupils that meet the criteria for accessing additional support. In addition to these class teachers can target children with SEN within class sessions through Quality First Teaching.

Quality First Teaching
At John Rankin Junior School we are committed to providing Quality First Teaching for all pupils. To ensure the needs of all pupils with SEN are being met and recognised they have “Pupil Profiles” information sheets as part of the School Action Plans. These share strengths, likes, dislikes and barriers to learning as well as personalised strategies for teachers and adults working within the class on how the curriculum can be adapted to suit their learning needs. These are written with parents, staff and the child.

Working Together and Planning Together

At John Rankin Junior School we believe the involvement of parents in their children's progress and needs is vital. We believe strongly in working as a partnership with parents and the child.

For children with School Action Plans (previously known as IEPs), they are reviewed and new targets set at the beginning of the Autumn, Spring and Summer term. Parents and children are invited into school to discuss next steps and plan targets together.

For children with a statement or an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan) we hold Annual Reviews in addition to termly SAP (School Action Plan) meetings.

Our school SENCo's (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator's) hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. We encourage parents to contact the Class Teacher or SENCO by phone, email or in person if they have a simple query or wish to discuss their child. At John Rankin Junior School we also hold SEN Coffee Shops termly.

Coffee Shop for parents/carers who have children with additional needs

We are very proud of the fact that the John Rankin Schools are committed to being inclusive. You no doubt chose this school because we value each child as a unique individual. Every child matters here, as do their parents and carers. We aim to tailor our provision to meet the needs of all our children. Every child has their area of strength and many children also have areas where support is needed.

Parents and carers who have children with additional needs are invited termly to informal Coffee Shops, where our Family School Support Worker and SENCOs are available to welcome you and it is a chance to chat to other parents/carers.
